Cloverfield

[

I was impressed, but I think a great portion of the audience didn’t appreciate the movie for what it was supposed to be. I heard a great deal of grumbling the moment the final scene ended, as everyone fled the theater in pursuit of more interesting activities, like driving home at 2:45 AM, I suppose. On principle I generally stay through the credits (sometimes to the annoyance of friends), and I’m glad I did in this case, as the “Cloverfield Overture” music (the only score the movie had) was powerful.

The camcorder-look effect was flawlessly done, and the overall style was consistent throughout. I really can’t come up with a single complaint. Sure, the characters were one-dimensional and annoying, but that wasn’t the point. //Cloverfield// is a cleverly done bit of homage to alien-invasion and monster movies of eras past.

  1. Hey, Michael! I watched Cloverfield some weeks back & had great expectations, having seen the trailer & knowing it was by J.J. Abrams & all. But I was disappointed. Technically, it was excellent (a true pee-in-pants experience, the kind I like, for some sick reason) & I enjoyed it…until the end. The ending was really abrupt & I know it was meant to be that way but still, I couldn’t quite believe I’d just spent eight Sing dollars on something that, technically speaking, was an improved Blair Witch Project. Sure, it was exciting & extremely well done but had nothing in the way of plot.

There were two things that set it apart from your run-of-the-mill monster movie: the way it was filmed, from a first person p.o.v., so it would seem like the viewer was actually in the movie – that’s the positive side of it, if you can get past the motion sickness factor that accompanies this (luckily I’m immune to that kinda thing). The negative side was that, unlike most monster movies, this one had hardly any plot.

Oh, well. Just my $0.02 worth.

Hope you’re doing well! We’ll catch up soon, yah?
