Hmm…

Why aren’t there any libraries with coffee shops?

Maybe they’re afraid people are going to spill coffee in the books.

Although, the earnings from selling the coffee would probably more than make up for lost books due to coffee damage.

You know?

No coffee allowed in the Reference Section, though. Those Britannicas are probably worth a lot.

  1. They do, It’s called Barnes & Noble or Borders with Starbucks inside. The reason they don’t have them in libraries is because library goers don’t want to hear people sipping their coffee every 10 seconds. In the quietness of libraries, any repetetive noise can become quite irratable.

  2. my school, RIT, does…sort of. There is a coffee shop right next to the library. There is a connecting door from the shop to a section of the library where you can actually bring drinks…at least people do and the librarians don’t say anything. The rest of the libary is, as any other libraries, drink-free area. But it’s nice to have an area like that. You can also just check out a book from the library and go straight into the coffee shop to read too.

  3. For some reason I find it a tiny bit harder to read with music in the background, I guess because the parts of my brain that process reading and listening to music or processing sound are the same. (I hope that doesn’t mean I’m sub-vocalizing as I read… I don’t think so; while not the fastest reader I’m sure I read much faster than I can speak. Hell, I can type faster than I can speak. Ha ha, I wish.) Anyway, my point is that bookstore “libraries” always have some sort of music playing in the background, usually some sort of un-memorable classical or jazz playing softly enough that it’s not too distracting, but loudly enough that I can’t help grabbing onto it and trying to figure out what I’m hearing, every once in a while. That’s certainly no problem while shopping (possibly potentially minutely pleasant), but it’s not the ideal setting for reading. I guess, though, that’s what good earphones are for. Blocks out coffee slurping, if that’s the thing that’s bothering, you, too.
